FORESHADOW
Here’s a nod to images that evoke the element of foreshadow for the Aug. 2 edition of the Daily Post weekly photo challenge. I often write about New York City’s ever-changing landscape on this blog, noting gentrification and the loss of what makes a community identifiable and unique.
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
In this case, just a few photos taken before the major tug-o-war between developers, politicians and the working-class residents of Brooklyn’s enclave best known for its iconic seaside amusement park. As we speak, the corporate conversion, and subsequent upheaval, of Coney Island is in full swing. The latest casualty: an historic pedestrian bridge on Surf Avenue. But, most of the boardwalk’s small businesses and family operations have long gone.
Stay tuned for what’s next … and don’t miss the new documentary, Zipper: Coney Island’s Last Wild Ride, opening this weekend in New York. Progress isn’t necessarily in everyone’s best interest.
