MUSIC: Orgy Returns at Irving Plaza

Orgy, one of the most original alt rock bands to surface in the late 90s and signed to KoRN’s label, resurfaced from a hiatus of sorts to deliver a powerhouse show at Irving Plaza earlier this week. New band members were on point as original frontman, Jay Gordon, energized the crowd filling the historic NYC landmark (formerly Filmore East) wall to wall. Crowd surfing was in full effect as pulsating lights juxtaposed a razor-sharp barrage of hits which came fast and furious. People nearly lost it when Gordon left the stage to walk through the audience and offer up Orgy’s signature cover of the New Order track, Blue Monday (yes, it was electric even without the original lineup).

A trio of acts _ Beta Plus Embryo, Star Killer and the high-energy Austin, Texas-band One-Eyed Doll _ gave hardcore Orgy fans something fresh to whet their appetites before the night’s main attraction. I thoroughly welcomed the whimsical and in-your-face showmanship of the latter and cannot wait to hear more from One-Eyed Doll (kudos to lead singer/guitarist Kimberly Freeman and Jason Rufuss Sewell, AKA, “Junior”  on the drums).
