“The Armory Show is a great platform to introduce to a qualified international audience some of the most engaging art being made in the centers, corners and archipelagos of the world.” — Daniel Roesler, Galeria Nara Roesler, São Paul

CONTEMPORARY AND MODERN ART

Every March, buzz picks up around one of the most influential fine art events in Manhattan _ The Armory Show. This year attracted hundreds convening at Piers 92 and 94 to mark  the 14th annual international contemporary and modern art fair. Highlights of the March 8-11 event included works of the 2012 Commissioned Artist Theaster Gates and the Nordic Countries in Armory Focus (19 of the most exciting galleries from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland); an international roster of collectors, critics, curators, artists and galleries; Armory Film (a series featuring an international selection of leading contemporary video and experimental films curated by Moving Image); opening night party at MoMA; an eclectic Open Forum program with major art world figures; and Armory Arts Week in partnership with New York’s top cultural institutions.

IN THE SPIRIT OF ART BASEL

A strong point about Armory Arts Week is the sheer range of creativity on display as seen at the Fountain Art Fair at the Armory (25th and Lexington) and VOLTA NY, an invitational show of emerging solo artists’ projects. In the spirit of the acclaimed Art Basel, founded in 2005, VOLTA NY concentrates its focus on the artist with select participants featuring their projects such as this year’s Artspace; Art/Trek NYC; CULTURE SHOCK ; The HomeBase Project; and NURTUREart. And, what I appreciate about the Fountain Art Fair is that it genuinely celebrates diversity in an exhibition of avant-garde artwork in New York during Armory week, Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach and Los Angeles during Pacific Standard Time weekend.
