FASHION: 2012 Graduating Class Displays Talent at FIT
If you’re in New York City and have a little time to spare, swing by one of the true gems of the Fashion District. Starting this month, the spotlight shines on more than 800 students receiving degrees from the Fashion Institute of Technology located on w. 27th Street and 7th Avenue. FIT’s Art & Design Graduating Student Exhibition is on view to the public at no cost from May 9-22, 2012, throughout the urban campus.
Think beyond the popular TV show “Project Runway” since multiple disciplines are represented: Accessories Design, Advertising Design, Communication Design, Fine Arts, Computer Animation & Interactive Media, Fabric Styling, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, Toy Design, Jewelry Design, Menswear, Packaging & Design, Photography, Textile/Surface Design, and Visual Presentation & Exhibition Design (which wowed me during a recent visit). The latter will be on display through Sept. 3, 2012, and features well-placed shades of pink in honor of a classic fashion icon _ the Barbie doll.
In 2011, Mattel Inc. sponsored a design competition which included the work of various Art & Design programs at FIT. For the 2012 Spring semester, Visual Presentation & Exhibition Design students created an exhibit that includes projects formed around the finalists’ work.
