MUSIC: Donna Summer, A Class Act … Always
My fondest memory of Donna Summer immediately takes me back to my youth, sitting in a movie theater waiting to see the 1978 hit, “Thank God It’s Friday,” starring Summer as an aspiring singer with dreams of becoming a disco star. Life truly imitates art as the world pays respect to the “Queen of Disco,” who died today at 63 after battling lung cancer. The five-time Grammy winner chose to keep her illness private, so news came as a shock to loyal, multi-generational fans of the legend. Her voice was sultry yet strong; her look was undeniable classic beauty. And, she epitomized warmth and soul whenever you saw her. A non-stop barrage of club anthems would define an era and Summer never fell out of style among the denizens of dance culture. I am most thankful for her musical influences throughout the years, and I will always consider this woman a class act.
