PHOTO: Coney Island Mermaid Parade 2012

The Coney Island Mermaid Parade began in 1983, heralding a now 30-year tradition which celebrates all things sun, sand and kitsch. Fun factoid: Before mermaids took over Surf Avenue, the Coney Island Mardi Gras Parade reigned supreme from 1903-1954. It’s also the 85th anniversary of the Cyclone roller coaster. According to Coney Island USA, which also produces the Coney Island Circus Sideshow, the Mermaid Parade is the nation’s largest art parade and one of New York City’s greatest summer events. A colorful and lively cast of characters were on full display for the 2012 seaside festivities on Saturday, June 23. Fabulous!
