ART: Future of Graffiti Mecca 5Pointz in the Balance

2012 MARKS DECADE OF HIP HOP HISTORY AT THE ‘INSTITUTE OF HIGHER BURNIN’

All the elements that converge to make 5Pointz Aerosol Art Center more than just another NYC tour bus stop may not be enough to squash imminent plans to demolish and redevelop the sprawling urban landmark in 2013. Despite obvious cause to salivate over profits from prime Long Island City, Queens, real estate, I cannot fathom why we must lose something as culturally priceless as this internationally revered creative haven for young and old _  aerosol artists, B-boys and B-girls, graffiti legends, celebrities and pop performers, professional photographers and filmmakers or any true art lover for that matter. Sure, we’ve all seen this coming for years. Once again, everything is for sale and nothing is sacred in the land of milk and honey. According to reports, zoning allows for large-scale redevelopment, but proposed projects would still need special permits and public approval.

Regardless, efforts will continue on the grassroots level to save 5Pointz, which symbolizes a huge piece of Hip Hop history and essentially, Americana. In July, I caught up with members of the Dynamic Rockers celebrating their 33rd anniversary and raising more awareness about the situation, while dancers came out in full effect on Aug. 18  for the “Rep Your Style: Save 5Pointz Edition.” The graffiti mecca may not be MoMA or the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but it has been invaluable since inception and legitimizes a pure art form. For me, this one’s a no-brainer as I look at the diverse display of  murals covering an old factory warehouse … unquestionably a high point when riding along the 7 line from Manhattan.
