PHOTO: ‘Becoming Visible’ Series at Robert Miller Gallery

An opening reception at the Robert Miller Gallery is planned this week celebrating the works of several photographers who diligently “turn their lenses to the ordinary, outcast or misunderstood parts of contemporary culture,” amid a digital era where Americans are bombarded with flashy images and airbrushed pictures, according to the gallery. Contemporary photographer Josh Lehrer’s black and white portrait series on transgender youth, Becoming Visible, is part of the F.S.A. Photography and Contemporary Social Realism exhibition. Earlier this summer, I had the good fortune of meeting Lehrer and later interviewed him about the series. In my opinion, Becoming Visible is one of the most important pieces of cultural and social commentary out there and it is not to be missed.
