FASHION: Kapow! Muffinhead Strikes Again at Susanne Bartsch’s Catwalk
NYC PERFORMANCE ART IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Muffinhead‘s hyper-pop fashion sensibility went viral last year when his image was captured while sitting in full decorum on a New York subway. “To wear any of my designs requires empowerment and daring,” the colorful performance artist says. “I enjoy getting a response for my look and I want to share that sensation with the rest of the world … I feel that the public requires something radical to pair with their everyday apparel and that’s what I’m all about.”
Befittingly, the dapper darling debuted his new line of unisex accessories during an official launch party at Catwalk, Susanne Bartsch‘s “art-house nightlife experience” at the freshly reincarnated megaclub, Marquee NYC. The “TKÖ Accessories/Round 1” collection includes an art-nouveau gold mirror set of dragon earrings, take-notice lightning bolt silk tie and that Kapow! double-knuckled logo ringplate from his infamous subway outfit.
The outlandish and avant-garde enjoyed themselves royally Thursday night with larger-than-life video art installations, a spirited dance-off and thumping House music by Alex from Tokyo and Emmanuel Harent. Trust me, a prime selection of tracks makes all the difference in the world. Bartsch, a legit New York nightlife icon, founded the Love Ball in the 80s, raising millions to fight AIDS and HIV from 1989 to 1992. Her ageless energy fuels the Club Kid aesthetic, steadily attracting devotees in droves to her events popping off around Gotham. The next can’t-miss party, “On Top,” returns to the posh Standard Hotel in the Meatpacking District on June 4.
