‘BE PROUD’ TO CREATE A BUZZ

I’ll keep the fifth installment of my ‘Be Proud’ blog series for NYC Pride Week short and sweet. The cover of an upcoming New Yorker magazine has already become a controversial Internet sensation after the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on gay marriage. Drawing sharp criticism and support, artist Jack Hunter originally submitted the unsolicited illustration, Moment of Joy, to a Tumblr page, according to the New Yorker’s site. Word is mum at the Sesame Workshop regarding the cover.

My view: It is a simple gesture reflecting the sign of our times: Two beloved Sesame Street Muppet characters, Bert and Ernie, snuggled in front of a TV watching the high court justices who made this week’s landmark decision. Finally.

“It’s amazing to witness how attitudes on gay rights have evolved in my lifetime,” Hunter said. “This is great for our kids, a moment we can all celebrate.”
