ART: ‘The Future is Now’ and Visually Stunning

PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE

Shout out to good friend and fellow champion of all things supporting NYC underground art culture, Citizen Chris, who invited me to a visionary show at the Highline Loft recently. The Future is Now (Aug.1-4) drew an eclectic crowd to the Chelsea gallery for a weekend of “cutting edge art, music, technology and performance … serving as the blueprint for the 21st century’s multimedia art experience.”

On the freight elevator up, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The vibe was right as soon as we stepped in the cavernous raw space housing this dynamic exhibit curated by NO AGENDA collective, Ad Hoc Art and Melissa McCaig Welles. A visually stunning collection transcended all expectations in street art, pop culture and urban contemporary style, including works by Adam Dare, COPE2, INDIE 184, Kimyon Huggins, ELLE DEAD SIX, Michael Holman, Swoon, NOBODY, Mike Fitzsimmons, Steve Cogle (remember his name) and others.

Each element, ranging from massive wall pieces to intense DJ sets and musical experimentation, successfully merged the worlds of past and present while embracing what lies ahead. Among music acts featured: Video Music Box innovator Ralph McDaniels, Todd Sines Live, Archtyp, Rocket Sam and Gray, the band formed by Holman and close friend, Jean-Michel Basquiat, in 1979.

TIMELESS, UNIVERSAL

Hands down, this exhibit was a solid representation of what’s happening among artists amid emerging technologies and creative bursts of inspiration, spanning abstract expressionism on canvas to multimedia installations and graphic design collaborations. Yet another reason to appreciate your local artists, especially while they’re still alive and kicking. Some of us may make it to the top, others will continue as unsung heroes. Regardless, we add something vital to society’s bigger picture.

  1. Hi Tania, How are you? Two months ago I went to Kruger National Park in South Africa. I have a big photo report. Do you want to publish something about it? Looking forward to hearing from you
