Also holding it down, the critically acclaimed Afropunk Fest (Aug. 24-25) dives into another exceptional year with heavy-hitters in the underground music scene, vast visual ART WALL, skate park and custom bike show, DIY-theme market, yoga class, restaurant row and 26 food trucks.
Among bands you may wait in line to see, but don’t dare miss: Living Colour, Death, Brooklyn’s tween rockers, Unlocking the Truth, Chuck D and DJ Lord, ?uestlove of the Roots, NYC’s very own Mykki Blanco, Jada Pinkett Smith’s Wicked Wisdom, Saul Williams, Trash Talk, Jean Grae, Danny Brown, The Heavy (UK) and another Brooklyn outfit, The Skins.
Special Mention: The newest addition, AFROPUNK AFTER DARK, continues the vibe well into the night with intimate pop-up performances, celebrity DJ sets (enter the Vortex with Manchildblack), comedy shows, film screenings, art installations, story slams and drink specials at participating venues.
But wait, there’s more! On Saturday, supafly identical twins Nina Sky and indie soul rock crew (i am) isis join headliners for the Brooklyn Music Festival at Floyd Bennett Field. Dubbed as “paving the way to the VMAs,” organizers say it was designed to celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of New York’s largest borough. Tickets are on sale here.
The inaugural event is hosted by X96.3’s Platano Man and features acts on the bill representing everything from pop, disco and funk to alt rock, country, salsa and House music by DJ Ray Vazquez of Just Us Worldwide Productions.
