PHOTO: Surf and Turf at Coney Island Sand Sculpting Contest
An assortment of sea creatures and sand castles filled the shoreline for the 23rd annual Coney Island Sand Sculpting Contest in August. Lots of colorful characters were on hand, as well. Amid the cheer, post-Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts still were fresh on the mind of many.
I’ll give all the participants credit for spending a day at the beach working. The crowd was particularly impressed by three friends from Sea Cliff, NY, who spent six hours on their masterpiece. Merlin’s Castle, by Tim O’Keefe, Rich Demand and John Alberga, took first place for a team. It included a tiny pool and intricate details throughout.
