'WHO'S CHELSEA MANNING?' OUTDOOR INSTALLATION BY KYLE GOEN

‘WHO’S CHELSEA MANNING?’ OUTDOOR INSTALLATION BY KYLE GOEN

A 26-by-70-foot outdoor installation best illustrates my take on the infinite, this week’s selected theme for the Daily Post photo challenge. You’re immediately drawn in while gazing up at 1,600 transparent colored flags used to create “Who’s Chelsea Manning?” The simplistic, yet contemplative piece by artist Kyle Goen was spotted hanging across Water Street for the 2013 DUMBO Arts Festival in Brooklyn.

What seems to stretch endlessly, the installation’s meaning also inspires infinite interpretations. Viewed from afar, it becomes clear this mammoth pixelated image of the now iconic face and cap belongs to the 25-year-old court-martialed US Army private sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Convicted of several counts of espionage, though cleared of “aiding the enemy,” Goen believes Manning is guilty of little more than informing the US population of the government’s illegal torture centers and civilian murders in Iraq, according to the installation description provided.
